purposes but conservationists fear it may disturb the birds. They are keen to ramp up their efforts but losing 65 per cent of this year’s chicks has been a major blow, said Ana Isabel Fagundes of Portugal’s national ornithological society, SPEA. Conservationists have reinforced the nests that contain surviving birds to help protect them from the anticipated increased soil erosion as a result of the burnt vegetation. These have been removed “to avoid the risk of adult birds colliding with them on their nocturnal visits to feed the chicks,” said Paulo Oliveira, director of the National Park of Madeira, which includes the nesting home of the birds. Petrels and shearwaters are remarkable birds, the northern hemisphere equivalent of albatrosses — they spend almost all of their life at sea, returning to land only to breed. So the particular sites they use — and these are often small islands which can become extraordinary sights at summer nightfall for some of the commoner species as they return to their nests — are vital to their future survival.

Adaptation to Brightness Change , Contours , Jogging , and Apparent Motion
Stuart Anstis Frisby and Stone (2010) have dubbed adaptation the “psychophysicist’s electrode,” and John Mollon once (1974) famously said, “If it adapts, it’s there.” Psychologists piously hope that their many experiments on visual adaptation will tell physiologists where to look inside the brain. This chapter describes visual adaptation to temporal ramps, spatial edges, and apparent motion (AM...
متن کاملMotion-Driven Transparency and Opacity
When two adjacent surfaces move in step, this can generate a sensation of transparency, even in the absence of intersections. Stopping the motion of one surface makes it look suddenly opaque.
متن کاملRotating Squares Look Like Pincushions
Rotating squares appeared to be distorted into pincushions with concave sides. These illusory shape changes were caused by a perceived compression along the curved path of motion.

An orbiting ray pattern produces an unexpected gray disk. Here we demonstrate this visual effect and its possible insights into visual temporal integration.
متن کاملLuminance contours can gate afterimage colors and "real" colors.
It has long been known that colored images may elicit afterimages in complementary colors. We have already shown (Van Lier, Vergeer, & Anstis, 2009) that one and the same adapting image may result in different afterimage colors, depending on the test contours presented after the colored image. The color of the afterimage depends on two adapting colors, those both inside and outside the test. He...
